10th Battalion – May 1915
19/5/15
After several quiet days – on the evening of 18th May I recd a message from the Brigades to the effect that a division of the enemy’s troops had landed on Square 228 M– I at once issued orders for everyone to be particularly watchful during the night and to stand to arms at 3AM instead of 3.30AM + it is fortunate that I did for just at 3AM the enemy attacked in great force + came up in two solid lines right along our front only to be mown down by our rifle + machine gun fire – Three Turks actually tried to get over our trenches but were killed on the parapet – Considering the number who attacked us our losses were very light, our casualties only amounted to 10 killed + 20 wounded this attack lasted until about 6 AM
19/5/15 to 31.5.15
Since attack on 19th May the enemy has been very quiet; hasn’t made any fresh attacks, they continue to shell us every day but with very little effect. We are still occupying the third section of defence for the trenches. The 9th Bn holding no 1 section their right resting on Beach, then the 12th next ours with the 11th Battalion our left.
