…Persistent, though very contradictory, rumours of peace come from Berlin… one that they are trying to make peace with Russia, so as to have all their strength left for England – the other that there are attempts at a West-of-Europe Alliance, and Russia is to the spoils of war for all the other powers! Both sound to me rather unlikely, especially the latter…
