Cooper, Ethel – July 1917

My dear Emmie,
…I must take this down to Frau Jaeger’s now – I keep no more letters in the house, and have a key to hers while she is away.
I wonder if they will ever reach you, but what old history they will be if they ever do! Still they will fill the long gaps, if only a little-.
8.7.17
My dear Emmie,
I don’t know yet if the events of the last week have made such a tumult in the outer world as they have here. The Austrians at Brzezany and in the Caucasus went over to the Russians not merely by regiments but by whole divisions. The plainest hint that Austria is leaving Germany in the lurch.
On Thursday I was sent for to the police, and the preliminaries for my pass were drawn up – description, photograph, thumb print and so on – I am feeling hopeful again, for it has never got as far as that before.

My dear Emmie,
Sandor writes that his plans for next season are taking shape. He hopes to spend Christmas and the New Year here, but I have not told him yet that I am trying for my pass – he only knows that I am leaving the flat at the end of September anyway.
29.7.17
My dear Emmie,
Yesterday was Howard’s 21st birthday. I was thinking so much of him and you all. And I am full of hopes that I may really be able to see the boys before so very long. I went to the police yesterday and found that my pass was there, already made out, everything ready, but the permission to give it to me had not yet come. Still that is the most hopeful stage I have yet reached.
