Cooper, Ethel – March 1915

My dear Emmie,
… Sandor has a concert in Hannover today, and another in Leipzig on Wednesday – he is really lucky to have so much work at this time.
I am so glad Howard passed his exam so well, before he went into camp. I wish I knew where he is now, so that I could try and send a few lines somehow. I think he is most probably in Egypt from what I can see in the papers. The Canadian troops seem to be in France, and the Australians in Egypt, as far as I can make out.
It is most bitterly cold again… As a result, the winter seed and food has suffered, and again as a result, milk and potatoes rose in price today.

My dear Emmie,
… I had a few lines from my nice Mr Bennie from Ruhleben, the concentration camp. He was more or less free in Chemnitz till three weeks ago. Then all the Australians were taken too – why, I don’t know. He says he is only allowed to write one card a week and two letters a month. They have quite a good time as regards to diversions, for the prisoners get up to any amount of plays, concerts and lectures… [but] they are always more of less hungry. However, he seems well and cheerful enough.

My dear Emmie,
… It is Sunday, and the first spring day after a great deal of cold – so I worked in the garden all afternoon… I am only keeping two little bits for flowers and giving the rest of the garden up for vegetables…
