Seager, Alexandrine – December 1916
Christmas 1916
“Peace and goodwill to all mankind!!!”
What mockery!
There is no Peace that we can find
Till victory
Peace!!! While the soil of France is soaked
With blood-red rain
That calls to heaven for vengeance and
Calls not in vain!
Peace? While our dead abandoned lie
On hill and beach-
Dear dead, who held our honour high
As fame can reach
“Peace and goodwill!!!” to homes and hearts
All desolate
Or those in sick anxiety
Who aching wait
“The mills of God grind slowly, but
Exceeding small
And he will vengeance take as sure
And dead leaves fall.
