1 May Saturday
A splendid morning turned out at 6 oclock went through usual routine until 12 oclock then Cleaned and went ashore for afternoon, Went to the football at Sth Melbourne to see Carlton win. Came back to town and had tea. Then went to the Follies in evening, got back to camp at 11 oclock after a very enjoyable time, Wrote a letter home…

A very cold night, turned out at 6 oclock Went through usual early morning routine After Breakfast went out in full marching order, In afternoon went to Engineer depot on Bank of Yarra, received letter from Clara…
5 May Wednesday
A very chilly morning turned out at 5.15 fed up the horses, got cleaned and into heavy marching order, had breakfast packed rations for day, and entrained for Williamstown at 7.30. Went through musketry course until 4 when we caught train back to camp. Had tea at 5.45 on liberty at 6.30 P.M. arrived home after a very enjoyable evening at 11.30 P.M. feeling real tired.
7 May Friday
A very chilly morning turned out again at 5.15. to go down…on our test course. Fired it off at, 100, 200, 500yds making total score 70 out of 85…. We have received very disheartening news today re our leave there is a lot of talk of Interstate passes not being granted us
10 May Monday
A cold morning. turned out at 6 oclock then went on with general routing once again. Had leave conditions read out to us, and they were not very satisfactory. Wrote a letter to Minister of Defence re passes for travelling when on leave. Will receive answer tomorrow re same. Bed at 9 oclock
15 May Saturday
Very wet, turned out at 6 oclock, am looking forward to going home, Put in a very strenuous morning, so as to be able to avail myself of going got paid at 2.30 Caught train for home at 4.30 after sending a wire to Clara. Arrived in Ballarat at 7.20 P.M. and very cold it was
16 May Sunday
Had breakfast at Murray Bridge at 7.20 left there for the last lap of our journey, Arrived in Adelaide, 10.20 Caught train for home, arriving there at 11.20 a.m. After dinner I went out with father to see the damage that the storm on the previous night had done. It was simply appalling to see how the sea wall and Jetty had been damaged.
17 May Monday
Turned out at 8 oclock after the first nights sleep in a bed since my going into camp some months ago. Caught train for Mt Lofty…Saw Clara stayed with her until 5.50 P.M. then came to Adelaide…
19 May Wednesday
A real wet day turned out at 6.20. Went to town and met Clara at 9.45 a.m. Bought a ring. Was engaged to Clara… Caught train from Peterhead at 3.18 P.M. Saw Uncle Walter. Had tea at Murray Bridge.
20 May Thursday
Arrived at Ballarat in time for breakfast … Arrived in Melbourne at 10.35 a.m… Turned into camp again at 1.30 and it was in a terrible state, mud and water everywhere.

A very rotten day Turned out at 6 oclock in pouring rain… Another 125 horses arrived at 7.45 P.M…
