Everyone remembers the “Blitz” of German bombings of London in World War Two, but what about what the British Broadcasting Corporation has called “The First Blitz” – zeppelin bombing raids on London? Starting in 1915, the Germans managed to drop incendiary bombs for just over two years, before the British had developed the right combination of exploding bullet tip to not only puncture but also light up the highly flammable hydrogen sacs that kept the behemoth balloons airborne.
Interestingly, German leader Kaiser William initially didn’t wish to bomb London from the air at all, claiming that it would be wrong to be responsible for destroying the city’s cultural heritage. However, political pressure mounted and he eventually approved the first raids for 1915 – nine months after the war had begun.
