Letter from AIF base records to the SA Red Cross Information Bureau:
Australian Imperial Force
Base Records Office
8 June 1916
Dear Sir,
With reference to your letter… concerning No 3027 Private R. W. Carter, 10th Reinforcements, 10th Battalion, I beg to state as the soldier mentionsin his letter, which you enclose, that he expected to be leaving the hospital short, inquiries into the matter are not deemed warranted by this office. The soldier’s illness was evidently of a mild nature only, otherwise, it would have been reported by cable…
Your enclosure is returned herewith.
This information was conveyed to the soldier’s sister, Mrs Marjory Sumner, of Goolwa. She responded:
June 22 1916
Dear Sir
I received your letter concerning my brother. I am very glad to say… I received a letter from my sister and also a letter from my brother enclosed in hers which she had received from him. So all the anxiety so far is removed for a time. He is now in the Mediterranean Expeditionary Forces. He also states that he is in the best of health and has had the Honour of seeing His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and says he is a real sport and a gentleman…
I remain yours truly,
Mrs Hector Sumner, Goolwa
