Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to ask if you would kindly enquire and find the whereabouts of my brother 3027 Pte R. W. Carter, who sailed with the AIF on September 14th 1915. I last heard from him when in hospital in Egypt. He was in the 4th Auxiliary Hospital, Egypt, and we have not heard of him since… My brother’s from Point McLeay.

We beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 2nd inst relative to No 3027 Private R.W. Carter, 10th reinforcements, 10th Battalion.
Your enquiry has been sent on to the Base Records, Melbourne, and we will again communicate with you immediately on receipt of a reply.

Dear Sir,
I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter… concerning No 3027 Private R.W. Carter… of whom no report whatsoever has been received here. However, if you will obtain and forward to this office let letter from the soldier in which he states that he is in the 4th Auxiliary Hospital, upon receipt of the same, and if such action is warranted, enquiries will be instiuted and the result communicated to you…
I would mention, cases of ordinary illness are not reported by cable less likely to develop seriously of dangerously.

You will find enclosed the letter from Pte R Carter to Mother as you’ve asked for it. I’m enclosing it. We would like you to kindly return it if possible, as it’s the only once received from him.

We have sent the letter to Base Records, Melbourne, asking for them to make further enquiries, and if no satisfactory information is forthcoming from that source we will send the enquiry on to our commissioners in Egypt by the next outgoing mail…
