Seager, Alexandrine – December 1917
THE CONQUEST OF JERUSALEM
The glamour of the far Crusades has down the ages run,
And ever will the story of their deeds in song be sung;
And now their valour lives again, fierce flaming in its pride,
As slouch-hat Anzac horsemen into old Jerusalem ride.
Then gaily hang our bunting out, and ring triumphant bells!
Show every sign and token that a British vict’ry tells!
Let’s hail is as a prophecy, and blaze it wide and far,
For entry to Jerusalem shows we will win the war.
They’ve won their way ‘mid sand and sun through desert lone and drear,
with steadfast high endurance and a scorn of foe and fear,
We glory in their chivalry, we glory in their pride –
But, Ah! our hearts are aching for the gallant Boys who died.
