Smith, Ross – June 1915
June & July were quiet months with nothing much doing. One night the Turks had the audacity to attack Popes Hill held by the 1st A.L.H. Brigade when the famous 3rd Regt. were defending it too!
2 A.M. “Stand to Arms every man, post being attacked”! We were all out in no time & it was bright moonlight too. They came down the side of a hill & into a gully but didn’t get far. The 2nd Regt. were in the gully & we were on the hill. How those men laughed & swore & fired. Then we got a machine gun onto them & they bolted.
